Our Conceiving Journey

Egg Retrieval

Monday, February 27, 2012

Well today was egg retrieval day.  Pete and I got up at 4:45am to get ready for our drive to San Antonio.  We washed up with our unscented soap and deodorant.  You are not suppose to wear anything that has a fragrance because the smell could jeopardize the eggs and sperm.  We left the house around 6:00am and made it to their office on Stone Oak Parkway at 7:50am.  I was a nervous wreck for the whole car ride.

The nurse called Pete back first so he could give his sample.  I was then called back and changed into the gown, cap and booties.  The nurse Becca took my vitals, temperature, blood pressure and iron.  I informed her I was a nervous wreck and she was so sweet and kind to my feelings.  She looked at each arm twice to find a good vein for the IV.  She settled on the right hand/arm area.

When she was about to stick me with the IV I broke down in tears.  At that moment Pete rounded the corner and held my hand the whole time.  The nurse went to get the anesthesiologist so he could numb the area first.  The numbing needle went in and then the IV.  Oh boy did that IV sting like hell.  I kept feeling sharp twinges down my hand.  The vein on my right hand collapsed so now we had to move to my left hand.  He numbed the area and put the IV in with the first try.  I finally calmed down and started to watch the TV on the ceiling.

The nurse gave me versed in the IV to make me calm.  The next thing I knew Pete was looking at me telling me the procedure was complete.  I couldn’t even believe it was all over.  I woke up and was not nauseous at all.  The nurse gave me some pretzels and juice so I could get something in my stomach.   Dr. Arredondo came out and told Pete they retrieved four eggs.  Apparently for my age group that is a good number.  In a couple of days we should be getting an update as to how the eggs are progressing.  About 30 minutes later I was dressed and we were on our way home.  Pete and I stopped and had breakfast at a cafe before heading home.  We ended up getting home about 12:45pm.

I have had cramping the rest of the day and I am still not feeling well.  I stayed in bed most of the day.  I have taken two Tylenol but I am still feeling the cramps.  Tomorrow I will probably WFH and take something strong like vicodin for the pain
