Day 2 Shots – Menopur & Follistim

Thursday, February 16, 2012

So far the only side effect I have from the Menopur is a little bruising.  I did some googling and found that it is possible the shot was put into a blood vessel, which can cause bruising.  I do not have any side effects from the Follistim.

I was dreading the shots this evening since they were so painful yesterday.  As usual I worked myself into a tizzy, which makes things worse.  Pete had some errands to run so I made it home first. I prepped both syringes so everything would be ready when he walked through the door.  I fed the pups to pass time and still was so anxious.

I made a last minute decision to give the Follistim shot to myself.  This shot is a little easier since it is a cartridge/pen. We saw on one of the videos to ice the stomach area for a numbing effect.  I left the ice on for several minutes, wiped the area clean again with alcohol.  I breathed in deeply several times and then gave myself the shot.  The Follistim medicine burned a little bit, but not compared to the Menopur.

Once Pete got home I iced the other side of my stomach and we started the shot process.  The Menopur shot was burning and stinging so bad my eyes were watering.  Pete made a comment that he was pushing in the medicine quicker.  I told him to slow down as it was making the burning sensation worse.  Afterwards the shot area was bleeding more than yesterday.  I went ahead and iced the area afterwards as well and this helped tremendously.

So the new trick is to ice the area before and after the shots are given.
