HSG Procedure

Monday, January 23, 2012

Hi
I just wanted to share the experience I had to today with the HSG procedure.  First of all to explain that an HSG procedure is a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is an X–ray test that looks at the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes and the area around them.

Several days leading up to the appointment I was a nervous wreck, grouchy, moody etc.
The day of the appointment I took my antibiotic.  About 1 1/2 hrs before the appointment I took a Vicodin and a swig of Valium to calm down.  About 30 min prior to the appt. I took my 1mg of Xanax.  Taking these meds beforehand really helped tremendously.

The nurse at the ARA was incredibly nice and comforting.  She used the smallest speculum as requested. The speculum was inserted and then followed by the catheter.  I did not even feel the catheter being inserted.  The nurse removed the speculum but left the catheter.  This was a relief having the speculum removed quickly as possible.  The die was injected and I only felt very mild cramping.  The nurse had me move side to side so the iodine could get into both sides of the fallopian tubes, which was not painful at all. She took some pictures and x-rays before removing the catheter.  This whole HSG process only took 3 to 5 minutes.  I was so worked up over nothing.  I do recommend taking a pain pill and a Xanax to help you relax.  This will make the whole process smoother. The results will be sent to the RMA for review.  Next step is to do a Sonoysterography. (mock embryo transfer) procedure which takes place on Thursday.

I am also so grateful to have great friends who will be there when you need them. Lisa took me to my appointment, drove me home and will take me to work in the morning.  I am very fortunate to have people like that in my life.

Good night all as the medicine is catching up with me.  I am sure the glass of rose is not helping 🙂
